Former giant tumor patient walking on leg

The man who had 82kg tumor on his right leg removed is already up and walking around on the remaining leg that he did not use for the last four years.

The man who had 82kg tumor on his right leg removed more than three weeks ago is already up and walking around on the remaining leg that he did not use for the last four years thanks to physical exercises provided by Ho Chi Minh City-based FV hospital.

Hai is learning to walk on his remaining leg with the assistance of a walkabout walker for disabled people on January 28, 2012 at Ho Chi Minh City-based FV hospital.

A physical therapist of FV hospital visits Da Lat native man Nguyen Duy Hai daily to instruct him how to exercise his remaining leg whose muscles have seriously weakened.

On January 27, Hai told Tuoi Tre over the phone: “It’s my first Tet (Lunar New Year Holiday in Vietnam) in hospital. However, it is perhaps the happiest Tet I’ve ever had because I’m now able to walk on my left leg by using a walkabout walker for disabled people.”

Hai makes an amazing recovery after the surgery thanks to the special regimen provided by FV and his strong will and resilient spirit, according to FV’s anesthesiologist Dao Thi My Van, who participated in his operation led by American surgeon McKay McKinnon on January 5.

The hospital is no longer administering him antibiotics, Van said.

The 32-year-old man, who never dared dream that he could one day walk out of his house again by himself, now feels confident about the future.

“I will try my best to do physical therapy exercises so that I could walk with crutches soon,” Hai proclaims.

“Once my wounds are completely healed, I would register for a vocational course in my hometown to study how to repair cell phones to earn a living. I don’t want to be a burden to my mom anymore.”
