Around six tonnes of fish in Quang Dien have died

The torrential rain caused the water level on Bo River to sharply increase, damaging many red tilapia cages in Quang Phu Commune. The majority of the fish were mature.

Initial losses were estimated at around VND300 million (USD12,000).

The rain has caused high levels of mud and silt which reduced oxygen levels in the water, which has been blamed for the fish deaths.

People have been called on to buy the dead fish to use as feed for their poultry and cattle.

Phong added that local authorities had overseen the situation and instructed farmers to take care of the remaining fish to mitigate their losses.

The central region of Vietnam has faced heavy rains over the recent days caused by the impact of Storm Sonca. Thua Thien-Hue was among the hardest-hit localities.
