Flood season bringing abundant source of fish for locals

A new fishing season begins for the people living around the upper part of Red River as the water rises high.

When small floods start to appear at the upper part of the Red River, it also marks the beginning of a fishing season for the people living around this area in Lao Cai Province.

Traditional fishing techniques using nets and hooks are mostly used, instead of trapping or electric fishing methods, to minimise the effect it may place on the environment and particularly Red River.

It was reported that fishing is not a mean for living here, but mostly as a hobby practiced by the locals at this time of the year. The fish caught are often small and weigh only about 1-2 kilograms, not worth much to be sold. It has instead become a local food specialty for many generations of people in this area.

Below are a few interesting photos of locals fishing at the upper part of Red River in Lao Cai Province that we have been able to capture:

Patiently waiting for the fish.
