Meizan CLV Company sells between 800-1,000 tonnes of cooking oil, wheat flour, and instant noodles every month. Since the end of 2021, they have raised the price of cooking oil several times following the rising prices of materials and transportation. The prices of instant noodles and wheat flour have also been increased by 10 percent from February.

"We’ve tried to adjust production costs to keep our prices unchanged," a representative of the company, Luu Huynh said. "But the prices of materials and transportation have all risen sharply following six continual petrol increases since last December, making it really difficult for us."

An egg supplier, Vinh Thanh Dat Food Company, has participated in the city’s price stabilisation programme and kept their prices unchanged since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the company has just asked for approval from local authorities to raise their prices from this month.

"Transportation fees have risen 20 percent, so we cannot keep the old prices," the company's director, Truong Chi Cuong, said. "We are also working with supermarkets about the price rise."

According to Ly Kim Chi, Chairwoman of the HCM City Food and Foodstuff Association, many firms in the city are planning to raise the prices of their products due to the high petrol prices which may continue to rise.

"While many companies are working with distributors to properly re-arrange shipment activities to reduce transportation costs, we hope that the government will soon have measures to curb fuel prices so that they can overcome this difficult time."
