The elephant was quite big, decomposing and emitting a foul smell. It is highly likely that the animal died of old age.
The cause of death is under investigation.
The area where the elephant was found dead usually sees the appearance of a herd of 3-4 elephants and is quite far from residential areas.
On February 16, an elephant also died in a forest in Quy Hop District’s Chau Phong Commune in Nghe An. Local authorities suspected that the animal starved to death.
Nghe An is home to 15 wild elephants, including those in Pu Mat National Park.
