
The Vietnam national team bagged two silver and six bronze medals on November 14, ranking tenth in the Jujitsu event on the first competition day of the 2014 Asian Beach Games (ABG) in Phuket, Thailand.
In women’s 60kg weight category, Nguyen Thi Huong defeated Pakistani rival Khan Beenish 4.1-4.0 in the quarter-finals. Then the 18-year-old girl triumphed over Hassan Shafaa (from the United Arab Emirates) 13-4.
However, she was easily beaten by Mongolian competitor Battsogt Buyandelger and clinched a silver medal.
In the final round of women’s 50kg weight category, Vietnamese athlete Dao Le Thu Trang suffered a loss to Masuda Maybelline (from the Philippines) 0-15 and snatched a silver medal.
Thu Trang also grasped two bronze medals in doubles and mixed events.
The ABG, running to November 23, has drawn the participation of 3,500 athletes from 45 countries and territories over the world.
Vietnam has sent 138 athletes to the games this year to compete in 18 events-body building, throwing ball, sepak takraw, Thai Muay, Jujitsu, beach petanque, and kurash.
In the 2012 Asian Beach Games held in China, Vietnam came 12th with two silver and one bronze medals.
