The programme was first carried out last year when the newspaper worked with donors and local authorities to present 1,500 insurance cards to disadvantaged students in the two southern cities of Hau Giang and Can Tho.
According to the vice-chairman of Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee, Ho Thu Anh, hundreds of local families in the area have been badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to thousands of children facing difficulties in their studies.
"There are over 150,000 students in the 2022-2023 school year, with nearly 9,000 among them belonging to low-income families," the official said. "Some 40 students have lost their parents to Covid-19. Many others need support in terms of school equipment to start the new school year."
Anh said that they had called for support from individuals and organisations to present scholarships, books and textbooks, clothing, and bicycles for many students from low-income families. They have also paid half of the health insurance fees for some students. However, many parents were unable to buy health insurance for their children due to financial difficulties.
"These health insurance cards are meaningful presents for students from families with difficulties," she said.
An 11th-grade student, Do Hong Xuan who received a card last year expressed her thanks to Dantri/Dtinews for the present.
"My dad has died and my mum is struggling to raise us on her modest income from selling lotto tickets," Xuan shared. "This health insurance card will help protect my health. Thank you so much."
The programme will continue to be launched for the 2023-2024 school year.
