Couple charged over fake rice sales in Ninh Binh

Police in Ninh Binh Province have charged a couple accused of repackaging rice under well-known brands, including ST25 and Seng Cu, and selling it as genuine products.

The provincial Security Investigation Agency said it had launched criminal proceedings and detained Vu Tien Chanh, director of Yen Chanh Co., Ltd., and his wife Nguyen Thi Yen on charges of producing and trading counterfeit food products.

Investigators alleged that the couple bought rice from a supplier in Dong Thap Province and had it repackaged into 10-kg bags bearing well-known brands, including Thai Do, Tam Thom Hai Hau, Seng Cu, Dien Bien and ST25, before selling it on the market.

The products were then sold on the market for illegal profit, police said.

Authorities have seized more than 12 tonnes of repackaged rice, along with related documents and evidence.

The case remains under investigation.
