Whales hold deep spiritual significance in Vietnamese fishing communities, regarded as sacred creatures in local beliefs.

A whale is found dead on a beach in Quang Binh Province.
On April 2, the Bao Ninh Commune People’s Committee, Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh Province, reported that locals found a dead whale washed up on the beach at around 7 am.
The whale measured 1.3 metres in length and weighed approximately 20kg. Upon discovery, the authorities and residents of Sa Dong Hamlet, Bao Ninh Commune, transported the whale to be buried at the Sa Hai Tu Cemetery.
Truong Quang Luong, Head of Sa Dong Hamlet, shared that whales are considered guardians of the sea and hold great importance to fishermen.
"In our coastal beliefs, burying a whale is a way to honour and pay respects to this revered creature," he said.
Previously, on April 1, another whale carcass, measuring 1.1 metres long and weighing 15kg, was discovered along Nhat Le Beach in Hai Thanh Ward, Dong Hoi City. Local authorities and fishermen organised a burial ceremony for the whale on the shore.
