According to the reports of the Ca Mau Department of Justice and the Border Guard Command in Ca Mau, a fisherman from Khanh Hoi Commune illegally fished in Thai waters in early 2021. The fines for illegal fishing vary from VND800m (USD34,500) to VND1bn. He is now facing a fine of VND907.5m.
Besides the fines, he may also have his boat seized.
According to the Department of Justice, the boat went trawling in Thai waters and returned to Vietnamese water to rest. The department claimed this meant the captain knew the maritime boundaries and deliberately crossing into Thai waters on three occasions.
He may face another fine as he bought his boat from another fisherman but had not changed the ownership registration for the boat.
