Many dumps have recently appeared along the banks of the lagoon. The dumps are becoming bigger and extending over a kilometre.

All kinds of household rubbish are being dumped here.

According to local people, the dumps have appeared for half a year and haven't been collected so far. Some people living near the lagoon would come to burn the rubbish sometimes, causing serious air pollution. "Parts of the rubbish have drifted here from upstream rivers following rain and floods," a local resident said. "Others are left by some local people."

Vice chairman of Nhon Binh Ward People's Committee, Truong Cong Hien, said that lots of rubbish have been drifting to the lagoon from the neighbouring Ha Thanh River following heavy rain and flash floods. “We're going to send environmental workers to collect the rubbish here soon," the official said.

Thi Nai Lagoon covers over 5,000 hectares and is the biggest ecological lagoon in Binh Dinh Province. The lagoon is home to many rare plants and animals and attracts many visitors.
