Around 92,000 workers in HCM City lose jobs in first half

As many as 91,968 workers in HCM City lost their jobs between January and June this year, said Le Van Thinh, director of the HCM City Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.

According to Thinh, of the figure, the trade service sector topped the list of workers losing jobs with 26,454, followed by the processing and manufacturing sector with 23,969, the construction sector with 1,854 and the finance, insurance and banking sector with 1,266.

Among people losing their jobs in the first six months of the year, 30,923 were unskilled, accounting for 52.41 percent of the total. Meanwhile, 17,752 people are over 40 years old, accounting for 30 percent.

Thinh added that during the phase, 29 enterprises in the city had reduced staff numbers by 500 people.

The cuts have been blamed on post-Covid-19 pandemic business operations.

The HCM City Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs has organised 59 online job fair sessions and provided job counselling services for nearly 70,000 individuals. This has helped 43,000 people to be successfully employed.
