The village is located at Song Kon Commune, Dong Giang District. Many have begun calling it the “village of two wives” because of how many men are marrying two wives these days. Even the village elder now has two wives.

Some fear that if there is no interference from authorities, this trend will continue to grow.

It has become very normal for a man to marry two wives in But Tua Village. When the village elder married a second wife, many were surprised because he was known to follow the law very carefully and polygamy is illegal in Vietnam. However, he has two children with his first wife and he now has a second wife as well.

This trend was discussed with Nguyen Cung Tien, head of the office of the People’s Committee of Song Kon Commune. He said, “The tradition of having two wives here has been expanded because local agencies and the Department of Justice have not effectively publicised marriage and family laws.”

Alang Dieu, who is responsible for publicising State policies, laws, and regulations in But Tua village said, “The whole village had a meeting to collect opinions from locals when the head of the village married a second wife. Documents related to this case are being completed and then will be submitted to higher level authorities for their direction.”
