34 killed in traffic accidents on first day of Tet holiday

Thirty-four people were killed and 31 injured in 52 traffic accidents nationwide on February 14, the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday, theTraffic Police Department reported.

Compared with the same holiday period in 2025, accidents fell by 18 cases, with eight fewer deaths and six fewer injuries, the department said.

Police nationwide inspected and handled more than 10,000 traffic violations during the day, temporarily seizing 101 cars, nearly 2,500 motorbikes and 102 other vehicles. Authorities revoked 283 driving licences and deducted points from more than 1,600 others.

More than 2,100 violations involved drink-driving and over 2,200 were related to speeding.

On National Highway 1A, officers checked more than 8,200 vehicles and recorded nearly 1,300 violations, issuing fines totalling an estimated VND 2.4 billion (USD 91,255). Nearly 190 licences were revoked or had points deducted, and 149 vehicles were impounded.

Traffic police units under the department separately handled 45 violations, revoking two licences and deducting points from 13 others.
