The crash occurred at around 9.45 am when a limousine hit a tree-watering tanker travelling ahead. The impact caused the limousine to overturn and block the road. A 30-seat coach then rammed into it before veering off the expressway, while a pickup truck struck the limousine from behind.
Ha Nam General Hospital confirmed it received 18 casualties for emergency treatment following the accident. The victims included 10 French tourists and eight Vietnamese.

The Cau Gie-Ninh Binh expressway is a 50km, four-lane route with two emergency lanes, where vehicles can travel at speeds of 60 to 120 km/h.
