Many roads in HCM City see severe congestion as people travel home for the Tet Lunar New Year holiday on January 25.
Since the early morning of January 24, all the main roads connecting HCM City and some neighbouring provinces have seen long lines of vehicles.
Many people in the Mekong Delta region had to wait long hours to cross National Road 1 and the HCM City-Trung Luong Expressway to return home.
Nguyen Minh Son took his wife and their two small children on a motorbike to drive home in Tien Giang Province. Son said they started the trip early, at 7 am, to avoid the traffic jams, but it still occurred from very early hours.
Other main roads, including Vo Chi Cong and Vo Nguyen Giap, also saw the same situation.
Some bus stations in HCM City have also received a rising number of passengers.
Passengers wait at the Mien Dong Bus Station on January 25.
The HCM City Transport Department reported that local bus stations served 93,500 passengers daily.
The deputy director of the Mien Dong Bus Station, Do Phu Dat, said that they expect to receive 182,000 passengers this Tet season and 19,000 passengers daily on some peak days from January 24-27.
"Most of the current buses have been fully booked for these peak days," he said. "We're arranging more buses to meet the higher demand."
