The 4-km work running was recognised as the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest ceramic mosaic in the world.

Construction started in 2008 and the mosaic was finished a few days before the 1,000th anniversary of Hanoi in 2010.

Up to 35 artists along with 500 children participated in design. The mosaic includes parts inspired by Phùng Nguyên, Đông Sơn  Lý, Trần, Lê and Nguyễn Dynasty style artwork and more modern and crude corporate sponsored sections. The work also incorporated images of Hanoi and children's drawings.

The deterioration of the artwork has been blamed on a lack of foresight, with minimal funds available for its restoration and upkeep.
