Fake hotel booking scams warned during summer travel season

Police in Hanoi have warned travellers about a rise in online accommodation scams as fraudsters exploit growing demand for cheap hotel and resort bookings during the summer tourism season.

According to Hanoi police, scammers have been creating fake Facebook pages designed to resemble official pages of reputable hotels, resorts and homestays.

Many of the pages use copied images, fake customer reviews, hotline numbers and paid advertisements to appear credible, while offering rooms at unusually low prices to attract tourists.

After customers transfer booking deposits, scammers often claim incorrect payment details were entered and ask victims to send additional transfers for verification or refund processing.

Victims are then blocked after making multiple payments, losing the entire amount transferred.

Police advised travellers to verify accommodation information carefully, compare prices across different platforms and book only through trusted websites or official hotel channels.

Authorities also urged people not to transfer additional money following requests related to incorrect payment syntax, frozen transactions or system errors, and warned against downloading unfamiliar applications or clicking suspicious links.
