Passengers at Dien Bien Airport.
Low-cost carrier Vietjet Air has just announced that they would suspend their last flight to the northern mountainous city of Dien Bien. Flights connecting HCM City and Dien Bien will be halted from February 12. This came just several months after the airline suspended its Hanoi-Dien Bien route in September 2024.
Bamboo Airways used to operate seven flights a week on the Hanoi - Dien Bien and four on the HCM City-Dien Bien routes before Dien Bien Airport closed for upgrade in April 2023. However, the airline did not resume these flights after the airport reopened in December of that year.
From February 12, there will only be Vietnam Airlines that operates one flight route connecting Hanoi to Dien Bien.
According to a representative from the Dien Bien Airport, Vietnam Airlines operates one flight daily on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and two on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
"The number of flights may change depending on the number of passengers," the airport said.
Located in a region famous for its natural landscapes and historic sites, Dien Bien Airport recently underwent an upgrade that cost over VND3 trillion.
After reopening in December 2023 following the upgrade, Dien Bien Airport served up to nine flights daily with over 60,000 passengers as the province organised celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory between March and May 2024.
