Camera traps have recorded endangered Asiatic black bears in the protective forests of the central province of Nghe An.

According to Nguyen Thanh Dung, director of the Tuong Duong Protection Forest Management Board, the unit worked with the Vietnam Wildlife Conservation Centre to set up camera traps in the Tuong Duong and Ky Son districts, Nghe An.

The first 50 camera traps in Tuong Duong District were retrieved between November 25 and December 6, 2024, while the remaining 52 in Ky Son District were collected from December 22 to January 5.

Despite challenging weather conditions, the camera traps captured images of many rare animals in the local protective forests, including endangered Asiatic black bears.

The Asiatic black bear is also called the Tibetan black bear, Himalayan black bear, or Asian black bear. It is listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red Data Book of Threatened Species as a vulnerable species among those facing threats. This rare animal is at risk of extinction due to habitat loss, poaching, and other environmental pressures.
