Group A will see Thailand play Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia and play-off winners between Brunei and Timor Leste.

Indonesia have been Vietnam’s archrivals in recent times. Vietnam lost 0-1 to Indonesia and were eliminated in the group stage at the 2023 Asian Cup. Most recently, they conceded a 0-3 defeat to the archrivals at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi in the second qualifying round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The ASEAN Cup 2024 is scheduled to take place from November 23 to December 21. In each group, five teams will play in a round robin format, with each team playing two home matches and two away matches. After the group stage, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, and from then on they will compete in a home-away format.

The Vietnam Football Federation recently chosen Kim Sang-sik of the Republic of Korea to coach the national team following Philippe Troussier’s departure.

Kim will have two debut matches with the Vietnam team in June (against the Philippines on June 6 and Iraq on June 11) as part of the second qualifying round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Vietnam have little chance to enter the next round, but they are expected to deliver a convincing performance to regain fans’ trust.
