Erosion and landslide ravage Son Tra Island

Son Tra Island and some other beaches in Danang City have continued to face serious erosions and landslides after the heavy rains over the past few days.

Son Tra Island and some other beaches in Danang City have continued to face serious erosions and landslides after the heavy rains over the past few days.

Phan Minh Hai, deputy head of Son Tra Peninsula and Danang beach management board, said on December 11 that they had put up several warning signs and direct travellers to other routes. There are total 10 locations damaged by erosion and landslide in Danang. The management board is working with the forest rangers in Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son districts to clean up the rocks and fallen trees.

According to Dam Quang Hung, chairman of Lien Chieu District People's Committee, they are trying to reinforce the embankment at Xuan Thieu beach and the sewers around which were damaged by strong waves.

On December 11, about 3km of Xuan Thieu beach was lost and seawater encroached 50 metres into the sewers and protective forest along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street.

"This area has never seen such erosion, especially as it has a pine forest," said Van Thanh Nhan, a local in Hoa Hiep Nam Ward. "Maybe because a part of the pine forest was destroyed to build the embankment it meant everything was swept away by the waves."

Construction of the embankment along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street was only started just over a month ago. Due to heavy rain, the construction was halted.

Danang beach is also attacked by tonnes of rubbish, most of which are drift woods and plastic bottles.
