People’s Court in Thuan An district today [January 7] opens a trial court in Giao Thuan commune’s office on Phung’s case for maltreating a three-year old girl whom she was paid to take care.

Phung, 52, was also ordered to compensate VND5 million (USD250) to her victim, Ho Thi Thuy Ngan.

Earlier, an official from the court proposed the penalty of between 24 months and 30 months in jail for Phung.

When asked about the reasons for her cruel actions to little Ngan, Phung explained, “At the time, I was too angry. I had to pull her hair to keep her for bathing as Ngan intended to run away.”

She admitted, “Children are often mischievous. Even though I am a mother, a grandmother and a baby sitter; I did not understand children’s psychology very well. I did not fullfill my tasks of nourishing and educating children nor follow my morals.”

She entreated the court to reduce her penalty to help her back home early so as to take care of her sick husband saying she is her family’s back bone.

Phung was captured abusing Ngan on a tape that went viral.

In 2008, another child-minder, Quang Thi Kim Hoa, in Bien Hoa City, southern Dong Nai province, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for injuring two kids that she was paid to take care of.
