Landslide threats prevent Yen Bai people from returning home

Many households in the northern province of Yen Bai, which were evacuated due to Typhoon Yagi, have still been unable to return home due to the ongoing risk of landslides.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yen Bai City has 145 areas prone to or hit by landslides, affecting 4,419 households. Among those, 2,514 households are in high-risk areas.

Minh Bao Commune is a hot spot for landslides with 248 households impacted.

Pham Thi Hai from Minh Bao’s Truc Binh Village said that a landslide happened behind her house on September 9 so her family was evacuated. To date, they have not yet come back home as the area remains at a high risk of landslides.

Yen Bai has witnessed 53 deaths and one missing in the wake of Typhoon Yagi. The province has experienced around VND4.63 trillion (USD188.97 million) in losses due to the typhoon.
