Tropical depression damages homes, topples trees in central Vietnam

A tropical depression strengthening into a storm in the East Sea has affected the central region of Vietnam, causing many houses to lose their roofs and uprooting and knocking over hundreds of trees.

Many localities in the central region have faced whirlwinds and torrential rains due to the impact of the tropical depression.

As of 1 pm today, September 18, as many as 12 houses in Thinh Loc Commune in Ha Tinh Province had their roofs torn off. Meanwhile, roughly 200 trees in the commune’s protection forest were uprooted.

Lots of trees in the districts of Loc Ha and Can Loc districts and Ky Anh District were also affected.

In Thua Thien-Hue Province, whirlwinds harmed 11 houses in Phu Vang District and injured one person.

Strong winds and heavy rain also damaged the roofs of three houses in Binh Son Commune in Quang Ngai Province. The province has banned boats and ships from going out to sea to ensure safety.

The tropical depression has been forecasted to develop into a storm today. The central region would witness heavy rains with the highest rainfall of up to 500mm.
