Facing a life-threatening condition and unable to afford a kidney transplant, she fears most for her child's future.

Tra My is undergoing dialysis three times a week at Viet Duc Hospital. Speaking to Dantri, she said, "Doctors told me I need a kidney transplant. My mother is a compatible donor, but the surgery costs VND 300 million (approximately USD 11,800), and we have no means to cover it."
Holding back tears, she added, "I've accepted my fate, but I'm scared for my son. I don't know how he'll survive without me."
My was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus at age 14. With intensive treatment, her condition was temporarily stabilised. She pursued a degree in music and got married in 2019. However, the marriage ended shortly after her son, Vu Hong Phuc, was born in 2020. Her illness then relapsed, forcing her to halt her studies and return to her parent's home to raise her son.
Unfortunately, Phuc was diagnosed with autism and, at five years old, still cannot speak. "Doctors say early intervention is vital, but even a few million dong each month is beyond my means," she said.
To support My's treatment over the years, her parents sold half their land for VND 500 million (approximately USD 19,700). Her father now works as a security guard, earning VND 5 million (approximately USD 200) a month, while her mother, Phung Thi Yen, 51, does part-time domestic work with an unstable income. The family lives frugally, saving every penny to care for My and her child.
"I've been tested, and I'm a match to donate a kidney to My," said her mother. "But we simply can't afford the VND 300 million for the transplant. We humbly ask for help from kind-hearted donors," she pleaded.
Dr Tran Minh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Organ Transplant Centre at Viet Duc University Hospital, confirmed, "Nguyen Tra My is suffering from end-stage kidney failure caused by complications from lupus. She requires haemodialysis three times a week. A kidney transplant is her only chance to prolong her life and improve her quality of life."
