Airlines urged to expand fleet amid passenger surge

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has urged local airlines to add more aeroplanes amid the sharp passenger rise.

In February, Vietnamese airports served 7.3 million passengers, up 12 percent on-year. International passengers reached 4.2 million, up 22 percent on-year, while domestic passengers reached 3.1 million, up 1.6 percent year-over-year.

In the month, Vietnamese airlines transported up to 4.8 million passengers, up 6.2 percent year-on-year, including 1.7 million foreign passengers.

According to the CAAV, the number of passengers travelling through Vietnam’s airports is expected to rise 8 percent by 2024. However, the aircraft shortage persists due to ongoing engine recalls and the global scarcity of leased planes.

Therefore, the CAAV has urged Vietnam’s airlines to expand their fleets to meet growing demand. The authority has also directed airlines to enhance service quality, maintain on-time performance, and optimise takeoff and landing slots to mitigate flight delays and cancellations.

Agencies which intentionally overcharge fares illegally will be strictly fined.
