On Sunday, Vo Van Thom joined the 42-km run race, but the suddenly fell on the road at the 18-kilometre mark. He was given first aid on the spot and then taken to hospital, but he later died.
Dr. Trinh Van Hai from FV Hospital’s Emergency Department who provided the first aid to Thom said that he had a cardiac arrest on the route.
Hai suggested that Thom had suffered from a heart attack while running. However, the official conclusion about the death would be made following an autopsy.
Thom was among 90 first runners who finished the 42 kilometres of the Taiwan Excellence marathon in 2018.
This year was the sixth event, attracting more than 9,000 athletes who ran five kilometres, 10 km, 21km and 42km.
Dr Hai warned people to pay attention to their health when joining such activities and avoid participating in events beyond their strength.
