With more than 20 works in Sparkle in the Vastness, Tia-Thuy Nguyen laid out a visual feast as she continued to play with diverse materials.

Sparkle in the Vastness continues Tia-Thuy Nguyen's creative inspiration from clouds, from the stories of her father - a former Air Force pilot – who recounted how he flew through majestic clouds. Fascinated by the mysterious beauty of clouds, Tia-Thuy Nguyen developed an interest in the interplay between clouds and light. Naturally, they enter her work, in the shapes, in the layers of materials and even in the somewhat dramatic way of handling light, opening up magnificent scenes.

Tia-Thuy Nguyen developed the compositions using different shades of paint and then overpainted them using various craft techniques. The combination of countless sparkling beads and thousands of metres of colourful wool fibres combined with jute and bamboo fabrics has created vivid, brilliant scenes. The embossing, or intertwining, of the materials, offers an extremely harmonious sparkling effect of the surface layers.

Talking about Nguyen's ongoing exhibition, gallery founder Almine Rech, said "When I first saw Tia-Thuy Nguyen's sky paintings, I was immediately captivated by her ability to structure and imagine the space around us: the sky. The sky is in different atmospheric regions, from dusk to dawn, or at night. I would love to know about her passion for these paintings. Her work conveys both the beauty and awe of the sky; she shows patience in the process of creating the work, taking a lot of time to embellish the oil paintings on canvas with beads, the work expresses emotions such as love, fear and hope in the long days waiting for a soldier or hoping to return from war.”

The exhibition will run until February 24.
