Vietnam sharply increases overseas investment

Vietnam’s overseas investment surged in the first eight months of 2026, with total new and adjusted capital reaching USD 2.62 billion, 4.7 times higher than a year earlier.

According to a report released by the General Statistics Office on September 3, Vietnam’s overseas investment activity increased sharply during the first eight months of 2026.

A total of 113 new projects were granted investment certificates, with Vietnamese investors committing USD 1.21 billion, 2.8 times the figure recorded in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, 29 existing projects received capital adjustments, with their investment capital increased by a combined USD 1.41 billion, 10.9 times higher than a year earlier.

Overall, Vietnam’s total overseas investment, including newly registered and additional capital, reached USD 2.62 billion in the first eight months of 2026, up 4.7 times from the same period last year.

The transport and storage sector attracted the largest share, with USD 601.7 million, accounting for 23 per cent of total overseas investment. Electricity, gas, hot water, steam and air-conditioning production and distribution followed with USD 585.8 million, or 22.4 per cent.

Agriculture, forestry and fisheries received USD 516.6 million, representing 19.7 per cent of the total, while manufacturing accounted for USD 320.1 million, or 12.2 per cent.

During the eight-month period, Vietnamese investors channelled capital into 35 countries and territories.

Laos was the largest recipient, attracting USD 667.5 million, or 25.5 per cent of Vietnam’s total overseas investment. Cambodia followed with USD 486.5 million, accounting for 18.6 per cent.

India received USD 323.9 million, or 12.4 per cent, followed by Indonesia with USD 313.6 million, or 12 per cent.

The Philippines attracted USD 167.2 million, accounting for 6.4 per cent, while Kazakhstan received USD 149.9 million, or 5.7 per cent. The UK attracted USD 82.8 million, representing 3.2 per cent of Vietnam’s total overseas investment.
