Vietnam plans third runway and second terminal at Long Thanh Airport

Vietnam is preparing to build a third runway and a second passenger terminal at Long Thanh Airport as rising air travel demand accelerates plans to expand the country’s largest aviation project.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction has instructed Airports Corporation of Vietnam to prepare the rollout of phase two of the Long Thanh Airport project, including a third runway and a second passenger terminal with a capacity of 25 million passengers a year.

An overview of the Long Thanh International Airport project

Under the approved investment plan, phase two of Long Thanh International Airport will comprise the third runway, passenger terminal 2 with annual capacity for 25 million passengers, and supporting infrastructure.

Phase two was previously scheduled for study and investment during 2028 to 2032. However, with GDP growth from 2026 expected to accelerate and air passenger numbers rising faster than forecast, local authorities believe demand for expanded infrastructure will emerge earlier.

An early start to phase two, particularly construction of the third runway, is expected to allow the project to reuse labour, equipment and materials already mobilised for phase one, helping to cut costs, shorten timelines and reduce environmental impact.

The Long Thanh Airport project covers an area of about 5,000 hectares with a total investment of nearly VND 337 trillion (USD 12.96 billion).

Phase one started on January 5, 2021 on an area of 1.810 hectares, with two runways and one passenger terminal with a capacity of 25 million passengers a year.
