Vietnam loses its position as leading coffee supplier to Thailand

Vietnam has fallen to second place among coffee suppliers to Thailand, as Laos has unexpectedly claimed the top position, according to recent data released by the International Trade Centre (ITC).

Laos outpaces Vietnam to become the largest provider of coffee to Thailand
ITC statistics show Vietnam exported 1,360 tonnes of coffee worth US$7.43 million to Thailand in the first two months of the year, representing a 64.7% decrease in volume and a 35.6% decline in value year on year. Consequently, its share of Thailand’s coffee imports dropped from 54.54% to 24.29%.

Laos emerged as Thailand’s top supplier in this period, exporting 3,460 tonnes worth US$13.4 million, up 16.2% in volume and 48.5% in value. Its market share in Thailand’s coffee imports rose dramatically from 42.2% to 61.7%.

Overall, Thailand imported 5,600 tonnes of coffee worth US$27.1 million in two months, a 20.5% decrease in volume but a 12.6% increase in value.

Thailand also increased its coffee imports from other countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brazil, during the reviewed period, further intensifying competition in the market.
