US sponsors fight against emerging epidemics

The U.S. Agency for International Cooperation has announced a package of US$ 800,000 to help Vietnam mitigate risks posed by newly-emerging epidemics by September 2015.

The U.S. Agency for International Cooperation (USAID) has announced a package of US$ 800,000 to help Vietnam mitigate risks posed by newly-emerging epidemics by September 2015.

USAID Mission Director Joakim Parker said that Vietnam is positioned in the region which is highly vulnerable to newly-emerging infectious diseases.

A novel strain of flu, influenza A (H7N9), emerged in China recently has caused severe impacts on human health and economic development.

It is necessary to boost cooperation among sectors and organizations in response to epidemics which would affect people’s health, safety, food safety, trade and economic growth.

Mr. Joakim Parker also proposed regular policy dialogues at the national level to share knowledge and raise image of Vietnam as a model which successfully deals with epidemic threats.
