Two women in Dak Nong fined for illegal wildlife trade and captivity

Two women in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong have been fined a total of VND1.01 billion (USD44,000) for the illegal purchase and captivity of eight endangered Bengal monitors.

Two women in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong have been fined a total of VND1.01 billion (USD44,000) for the illegal purchase and captivity of eight endangered Bengal monitors.

Under the provincial people’s committee's decision, Nguyen Thi Hue, 49, from Dak Nang Commune, Krong No District was liable for a fine of VND725 million for buying six Bengal monitors and keeping them in captivity.

The Bengal monitor is listed among endangered rare and endangered species in Vietnam

The fine of VND285 million (USD12,431) was for Phan Thi Truong, 34, who is from the same district. She bought two Bengal monitors weighing 4.9 kilos.

The two have violated the Government’s Decree 35/2019/ND-CP on administrative offences in the forestry sector.

The Bengal monitor, whose scientific name is Varanus bengalensis, is listed among endangered rare and endangered species protected by the law in line with Government Decree 06/2019/ND-CP.

Police in Dak Mil District also prosecuted a local woman for illegally keeping seven Bengal monitors and porcupines in late June this year.
