The discovery was made after local residents found suspected military relics while land was being cleared for the airport in Cua Viet Commune and alerted authorities.

The provincial Military Command's Recovery Team 584, together with local authorities, surveyed the site before carrying out an excavation.
The team recovered fragmented human remains along with military items including shoe soles, an infantry shovel, a body bag, military buttons, a machine-gun ammunition box, a stick grenade, a belt and a B52 mess tin.

Authorities said the artefacts would help identify the soldier through archival research and DNA analysis.
The remains have been transferred to Recovery Team 584 for temporary custody, while biological samples will be collected for DNA testing. Once the soldier's identity is confirmed, the remains will be returned to the family for burial.
