The case came up after an audit of the school, at Cu Chinh Lan High School, in Quynh Luu District, which only focused on the financial situation of the school from from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012.

The results showed a deficit of VND234.4 million (USD11,192) in the school’s books.

After the inspection, the school’s managing board requested Ho Thi Thu Hien, the school’s cashier, to make a report on the case.

Hien admitted to having stolen the money, but said that it was just a loan and that she needed the money for serious medical problems.

Nguyen Thi Hue, the school’s principle, sent a report on the case to the provincial Department of Education and Training.

In reply to a report sent by the school, the provincial Department of Education and Training asked that Hien be suspended from her job, and required to repay the money she took.

Vo Thi Nga, the school’s deputy principle, said ,“Hien and her family are facing financial difficulties, and they are unable to repay the debt at the current time," adding that the deadline for repayment should be extended.

The deadline has since been extended until 2014.
