Over the past few months, heat and drought in Quang Tri and Thu Thien Hue provinces had severely hindered the life of locals while destroying thousands of hectares of rice paddies and crops. In many places, people had to travel on foot 5 to 10 kilometres just to get drinking water. Daily activities such as bathing and washing were limited due to the scarce water resources. Weather conditions were virtually unbearable to cope with and seriously affected the livelihood of locals.

Under the influence of the storm as it struck the northern provinces, rains had started to fall in central Vietnam, particularly in Quang Tri and Hue, bringing much needed relief for which has been coping with a devastating drought. Hundreds of hectares of fruit and vegetable plantations have likely been saved thanks to it. In Quang Tri, locals are relieved and eagerly welcomed the change in weather.

According to officials from the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, about 2,000 hectares of rice paddies in the area will have a better chance to survive and thrive if the rainfall following the storm Conson continues.
