Quang Ngai hit by consecutive earthquakes

The central province of Quang Ngai recorded four earthquakes measuring 2.6 to 3.6 on the Richter scale on September 29, following a series of tremors this month.

Quakes in Mang But are triggered by the reservoir of a nearby hydropower plant.

The Institute of Geosciences reported three quakes ranging from 2.6 to 3.6 in Mang But Commune between 6.22 am and 9.54 am, and another 2.8-magnitude quake in Mang Ri Commune, which lies some 200 km away, at 8.41 am.

The quakes occurred at a depth of about 8 km with a hazard level of 0. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.

Since early September, Mang But has recorded multiple quakes between 2.8 and 4.5 in magnitude. On September 10, two consecutive quakes struck, one reaching 4.5, classified at hazard level 1.

From 2021 until now, the area has recorded more than 1,086 quakes ranging from 3.0 to 5.0 in magnitude. The strongest occurred on July 28, 2024, measuring 5.0 and felt across a wide area.

Experts said the quakes in Mang But are induced earthquakes, triggered by the reservoir of a nearby hydropower plant.
