President Sang will deliver a speech at the Japanese Lower House, which is considered a highlight of his visit as very few of foreign heads of state have the chance to speak before the Japanese Diet.
The Japanese diplomat applauded Vietnam’s efforts in scouring for the Malaysian Airliner plane that went missing on March 8 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
Since Vietnam and Japan set up diplomatic ties in 1973 their bilateral relation has grown steadily and were upgraded to a strategic partnership in 2009.
Last year’s two-way trade reached US$25.6 billion. Both countries are intent on doubling the figure by 2020.
Japan was Vietnam’s leading investor with its capital totaling US$5.7 billion in 2013, accounting for 26.6% of foreign direct investment (FDI) poured into Vietnam.
It remains Vietnam’s leading ODA donor with US$21 billion in ODA capital provided for the country from 1992 to 2013.
The two countries are working together on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement negotiations.
