PM urges December start to Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong railway project

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked agencies and localities to finish all necessary procedures and start construction of the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong railway project on December 12.

The PM issued a dispatch to speed up the preparation for carrying out the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong railway project. The dispatch was sent to the Ministers of Construction, Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and Environment, and Finance, secretaries of the provincial/municipal party committees and chairpersons of the provincial/municipal people’s committees of Hanoi, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, and Haiphong.

Under the prime minister’s instruction, the localities must quickly set up a steering committee for site clearance.

The Ministry of Construction needs to work with the localities to finish the project’s feasibility study before May 5. Meanwhile, the site clearance must be completed in August.

New resettlement areas must be at least equal in quality to previous homes, with support for local jobs and livelihoods. Where needed, temporary housing may be arranged for the affected people.

The Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong railway project will cost VND203.23 trillion (USD8.37 billion). It will go through Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, and Hai Phong. Starting at the border crossing point in Lao Cai, the 391-kilometre line will end at Lach Huyen Station in Haiphong City.
