Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has instructed concerned ministries to take urgent actions to deal with the freshwater shortage in the Mekong Delta region.

The Mekong Delta region is facing a prolonged drought and early saline intrusion, bringing about an acute freshwater shortage for many localities, including Ca Mau, Ben Tre, Soc Trang and Tien Giang. Residents have had to purchase clean water for daily use at high prices.

According to the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research, the region would face the peak of saline intrusion until the end of March.

The government leader has asked the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to direct the close monitoring of water source developments, forecasting, and providing timely information on the water shortage situation in the Mekong River and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta region.
