Dung also made a speech at the launching event, where provincial officials were reminded of the importance of safety when overseeing the plant’s operation.
The plant’s capacity, which is currently 6.5 million tonnes of crude oil per year, is expected to increase to 10 million tonnes within the next few years. The estimated increases are based on an expansion project to be completed by 2016.
Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Co. Ltd (BSR) is the current operator of the facility, which is located in Binh Son commune in the central province of Quang Ngai.
The refinery began a trial run in February, 2009. It has been running at full capacity since it was handed over to the state-run Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) on May 30, 2010.
By the end of December 2010, Dung Quat had processed approximately 8.3 million tonnes of crude oil, turning out 7.2 million tonnes of refined fuels during that period.
