Khanh Hoa cracks down on illegal wildlife trade

Authorities in Khanh Hoa Province are stepping up efforts to curb illegal wildlife trading and possession while receiving more wild animals voluntarily surrendered by residents.

Khanh Hoa Police said on October 18 that they were working with forest rangers to receive surrendered wildlife and investigate suspected illegal trading and possession.

Several wild animals, including protected species, have been handed over to authorities this month.

On October 16, Bao An Ward Police and forest rangers received a yellow-headed temple turtle weighing about one kilogramme from a local resident.

The turtle, a species of high conservation value, is being cared for and monitored before its planned release into a suitable natural habitat.

Earlier, a resident of Ba Ngoi Ward voluntarily surrendered a wild bird, while two residents of Xuan Hai Commune handed over turtles to local authorities.

Police have also uncovered suspected wildlife trading violations.

On September 10, Ninh Phuoc Commune Police and forest rangers found a man carrying four live cuckoos in a mesh bag attached to his motorbike in Phu Quy 5 Village.

The man allegedly intended to sell the birds for profit but could not provide documents proving their legal origin.

Authorities seized the birds and began investigating the case.

Khanh Hoa Police warned residents against illegally hunting, trapping, killing, possessing, transporting, trading or consuming wildlife and wildlife products.

People were also advised not to buy or keep wild animals without identifying their species and meeting legal requirements.

Anyone finding wildlife in need of rescue should contact police or forest rangers rather than releasing the animals without professional guidance, authorities said.
