Four earthquakes hit Quang Ngai commune within eight hours

Four earthquakes struck Mang But Commune in Quang Ngai Province within eight hours on October 18, with the strongest measuring magnitude 3.5.

The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre issued successive alerts for the four tremors.

The first earthquake occurred at 1.48 am, measuring magnitude 3.3, at a depth of about 8.2km. Its epicentre was recorded at 14.985 degrees north latitude and 108.188 degrees east longitude.

A second earthquake, measuring magnitude 2.7, struck the area at 2.58 am, at a depth of about 8.8km.

At 9.14 am, another tremor measuring magnitude 2.6 was recorded in Mang But Commune, with its epicentre about 6.8km below the surface.

Just 41 minutes later, at 9.55 am, a fourth earthquake struck, measuring magnitude 3.5 and reaching a depth of about 8.6km. It was the strongest of the four.

All four earthquakes were assigned a natural disaster risk level of zero, according to the centre, which said it was continuing to monitor seismic activity in the area.

More than 1,000 earthquakes of varying magnitudes have been recorded in the area since 2021.

Experts describe the area as seismically active in recent years. The Institute of Geophysics has installed 11 monitoring stations there to track seismic activity and support research and assessments.
