A Japanese tourist was charged VND1.2 million (USD510) for a 7-kilometre taxi ride in HCM City, ten times higher than what it should have been.

The HCM City Transport Department announced on March 15 that the Japanese guest recently travelled from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to a hotel in District 1. After being ripped off, he reported the case to the police at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

The police then worked with the inspectators of the municipal Department of Transport to identify the taxi driver.

The driver admitted what he had done. The real fare was just VND120,000 but he charged the foreigner up to VND1.2 million.

HCM City authorities have detected many such similar cases. People are advised to use the hotline of the Department of Transport or Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
