Many farmers in Quang Phu Commune, Krong No District have recently complained about the serious shortage of water at over 100 hectares of rice, which was allegedly caused by the construction of the Chu Pong Krong Hydro-power Plant.

According to a report from the Krong No District, the farming activities in the area have greatly affected by the construction works which have changed the water flow of the Krong No River.

"The Krong No District People's Committee has asked the project investor, Hung Phuc Company, to deal with the problems but they have yet to do anything," the report said.

"As many as 43 households reported that their houses were damaged by the site clearance work of the project," said chairman of Quang Phu Communal People's Committee, Hoang Phu. "However the investor has failed to pay any sort of compensation over the past year."

Meanwhile, a representative of Hung Phuc Company, Nguyen Kim Mui, said that the water shortage was mainly caused by the on-going drought and not the project's construction work.

"We have carefully worked on the construction plan to ensure that our project would not affect the farming activities of local people," Mui confirmed. "I think the current water shortage has mainly been caused the drought and the terrain here. We'll try to seek measures to ensure proper water supply here."

On July 30, the People's Committee of Dak Nong Province asked the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to work with other concerned departments to investigate the case and report to the committee by August 5.
