Hoi An coastline erodes again, threatening restaurants

Hundreds of metres of coastline in Hoi An Tay Ward, in the central city of Danang, have suffered severe erosion, threatening many restaurants as the storm season approaches.

A new 200-metre stretch of coastal erosion has appeared in Tan Thanh block, running parallel to Nguyen Phan Vinh Street and forming a 4-5 metre cliff that poses a danger to nearby residents.

Powerful waves cut deep into the shoreline on September 9, underscoring the severity of the erosion. The site is part of the C7 embankment area under the former Quang Nam Province’s Hoi An Coastal Erosion Control and Sustainable Protection Project.

Le Van Luc, 65, a resident of Tan Thanh block, said the erosion began in late July when strong winds and waves hit Hoi An. “It started with just a few dozen metres, then stretched over 200 metres as it is now. Erosion has occurred in past years, but this year it’s far worse, leaving residents deeply worried,” he said.

Residents and local authorities have implemented emergency measures, including bamboo piles and large sandbags, to protect the area. However, the temporary embankments were quickly torn apart by strong waves, washing away large amounts of soil and sand and revealing their helplessness against nature’s force.

According to a representative of Salt Hoi An Restaurant, the new erosion is located outside the sandbag-reinforced area, with an unusually rapid pace that far exceeds that of previous years.

“Every year we invest in sandbag reinforcements, but it’s only a temporary solution. Without effective embankments, our restaurant, and many others, including coastal villas, could collapse at any moment during the approaching storm season,” he noted.

Bui Van Dung, Chairman of Hoi An Tay Ward People’s Committee, said that the locality had asked Danang authorities and concerned agencies for support and resources to reinforce the eroded area before the 2025 storm season.

The Hoi An Tay Ward People’s Committee also requested the installation of warning signs, cordons, and danger zones to keep residents and tourists away for safety reasons.
