Ho Chi Minh City targets 5,000 EV charging stations by end of March

Ho Chi Minh City plans to install 5,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and battery swap cabinets at public locations by the end of March.

The number of charging points and battery swap units has risen sharply at public sites in recent weeks, as authorities work with businesses to accelerate deployment.

According to Bui Hoa An, deputy director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the city has surveyed pavements, roadsides and parks to identify suitable locations and complete procedures with companies installing the facilities.

“More than 300 stations have been installed so far. The pace was slow at first as the city had just started, but it will now accelerate,” An said.

He said the total number of charging stations and battery swap cabinets would reach 5,000 by the end of March, with the mix depending on business demand. The figure is expected to rise to 10,000 by the end of June, before expanding further.

The city is also preparing procedures to deploy EV charging stations at 19 bus depots and terminals. As these involve public assets, the projects will be subject to bidding.

“If things go smoothly, charging stations at bus terminals and parking lots will be rolled out by June,” An said.

He added that from October 2025, residents would begin seeing EV charging stations appear widely across the city within three months.

One measure to speed up installation is allowing companies to place charging stations and battery swap cabinets at public sites such as pavements and parks, provided they do not obstruct pedestrians or harm the urban landscape.
