Hanoi breaks ground on USD 4bn Bac Thang Long Urban City project

Hanoi has launched construction of the Bac Thang Long Urban City, a nearly USD 4 billion development spanning about 700 hectares, as the city pushes ahead with a multi-centre growth strategy.

The Hanoi People’s Committee and a consortium comprising Handico, Sunshine Group and Thai Nam Land held on Monday a groundbreaking ceremony for the Bac Thang Long Urban City project in Phuc Thinh Commune. The development is described as a strategic project in the restructuring of the capital’s development space towards a multi-polar, multi-centre model.

The ceremony was attended by Party General Secretary To Lam, senior Party and state leaders, representatives of ministries and central agencies, and leaders of Hanoi’s Party Committee, People’s Council and People’s Committee.

According to Handico, the project has a planned area of about 699 hectares and is designed to accommodate around 240,000 residents. It will be developed across Phuc Thinh, Thien Loc and Me Linh communes in Hanoi.

Total investment is estimated at about VND 99 trillion (equivalent to roughly USD 4.04 billion), with construction scheduled for 2026 to 2032.

Speaking at the event, Vu Dai Thang, chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, said the city has faced growing demands for site clearance and population relocation, creating an urgent need for resettlement housing with integrated infrastructure to ensure livelihoods and social stability.

On the same day, Hanoi also broke ground on another multi-purpose urban area in Thu Lam and Dong Anh communes, with total investment of more than VND 60.5 trillion (about USD 2.47 billion). Covering around 696 hectares, the project will pilot a compact, multi-functional urban model aligned with a 100-year planning vision and is expected to serve about 200,000 residents.
