Hanoi-Bac Giang Highway to be expanded to 8 lanes

The Ministry of Construction has agreed on expanding the six-lane Hanoi-Bac Giang Highway to eight lanes following the northern province of Bac Ninh’s proposal.

The decision was made at a meeting of Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh’s with Bac Ninh authorities on September 12.

According Chairman of the Bac Ninh People's Committee Vuong Quoc Tuan, the Hanoi-Bac Giang Expressway, particularly the 14-km stretch from Nhu Nguyet Bridge to the junction with National Highway 31, features small underpasses for local residents.

Meanwhile, this area has more than 300,000 workers, so traffic congestion often occurs during peak hours.

The province will strive to clear the entire frontage road to enable the investor to carry out the project, Tuan added.

The chairman suggested that the expanded highway include underpasses with a cross-section twice as wide as the existing ones.

Tuan also noted that after the merger, Bac Ninh Province has been planned to become a centrally governed city by 2030.

Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh agreed on the Tuan’s proposal, urging the provine to start the project on December 19.

The Hanoi-Bac Giang Expressway is more than 46 kilometres long, opened to traffic in April 2016, and began toll collection in May of the same year. The toll collection period is about 21 years.

The route starts at Km113+985 on National Highway 1 in Bac Giang City in Bac Giang Province and ends at at Km159+100 at the site of the former Phu Dong Toll Station in Long Bien, Hanoi.
